The location of Faridpur district is in the central part of Bangladesh. It’s one of the ancient and historical heritages of the country. It was known as Fatehabad previously. In 12Th century, the current Faridpur was named after the great Sufi saint “Shah Sheikh Fariduddin”. The region was famous for indigo cultivation during the East India Company period. It was greatly used for indigo cultivation of the banks of the rivers Garai, Madhumati, Barasia, Chandana, Kumar etc. The location in Mirganj of Alfadangha upazila was the main Indigo Headquarter. Faridpur town was declared as a municipality in 1862.

Faridpur was a sub-division under Dhaka division during the Pakistan period. Faridpur was divided into five district named Gopalganj, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Faridpur under the decentralization program of the formerly Bangladesh government in 1984 after the liberation of Bangladesh.

Geography of Faridpur District

The land area of Faridpur district is 2072.72 square kilometers and located in between 23°17′ and 23°40′ north latitudes and in between 89°29′ and 90°11′ east longitudes. The border of the district with Rajbari, Gopalganj, Madaripur and Shariatpur districts, as well as riverine borders with Dhaka, Manikganj and Munshiganj districts in the Padma River, which forms northeastern boundary. Among the rivers, the main ones are the Padma, Old Kumar, Arial Khan, Gorai, Dhol Samudra, Ramkeli, Ghoradar and Shakuner Beel. Cows, horses, sheep, goats and buffalo are the fauna of the region. Rice or paddies covers 45% of the gross temporary cropped area in terms of flora.

Faridpur District Economy

Faridpur district is one of the center points of the jute and hilsa fish trade. There are numerous jute mills, sugar mills and a 50 MW thermal power plant as the industrial sector. It’s predicted to drastically boost economic activities in Faridpur District with the under-construction Padma Bridge. Faridpur is an important hub of the Bangladesh Railway, with its tracks connected to the Indian Railway in West Bengal in terms of transport. Besides, it has been linked with Kushtia, Meherpur, Khulna, Barisal, and Jessore by road. Apart from the rice, the other crops of the district are including peanut, wheat, oilseed, pulse, turmeric, onion, garlic and coriander. Besides, mango, jack fruit, blackberry, date palm, coconut, betel nut, papaya, banana, and guava are the notable fruits of Faridpur.

Besides, the rate of literacy of the district is 49.00% where Male 50.30% and Female 47.70%. The rate of school attendance is 54.80% for 5 to 24 years age group.
